Advising

Upon admission to the program, a student will be assigned a faculty adviser whose field of expertise most closely matches their research interests. The adviser will work with the student to guide their program of study and preparation for the Ph.D. exam and provide an annual review of progress.  The adviser generally heads each student’s dissertation committee.

Feminist Studies and Affiliated faculty also advise students in courses, independent studies, and as members of graduate student Ph.D Exam and Dissertation Committees.  The Ph.D. and Dissertation Committee adviser is usually a Feminist Studies Department Faculty.  Faculty affiliated to the program occasionally assume this role.

The faculty advisor plays an important role in the graduate student’s preparation.  Before applying, student’s should familiarize themselves with the work and interests of Feminist Studies Faculty.   The Department encourages applicants to contact Feminist Studies Faculty in advance to discuss their prospective program of graduate study.
