The Baskin Feminist Scholars Program

The Baskin Feminist Scholars Program (BFSP) is designed to support transfer students in the Feminist Studies Department at UC Santa Cruz. The overarching goal of BFSP is to create an educational bridge to local community colleges while also promoting the opportunity to pursue Feminist Studies to marginalized students, and specifically local community college transfer students. The Feminist Studies Department currently has a total of 100 declared and 40 proposed undergraduate majors. Of these, 46 are currently community college transfers, or 19%, which is slightly higher than the UCSC average of 15%. With the support of the Peggy and Jack Baskin Foundation, the Feminist Studies Department was able to create a robust infrastructure to support transfer students in their pursuit of a B.A. in Feminist Studies by providing graduate student mentorship, tutoring, and program activities. The BFSP offers programming during the academic year to help maintain a sense of community among FMST transfer students. This includes: frequent study sessions, info sessions about graduate school and career opportunities, weekly mentor office hours, and more.

The Baskin Feminist Studies Scholarship

Through the generous support of the Peggy and Jack Baskin Foundation, the UC Santa Cruz Feminist Studies Department is pleased to announce a scholarship opportunity for undergraduate community college transfer students from Cabrillo College, De Anza College, or Monterey Peninsula College. For the 2022-23 academic year, Baskin Feminist Scholars (the scholarship recipients) will receive $2500.

To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must have transferred from Cabrillo College, De Anza College, or Monterey Peninsula College and have a proposed major in Feminist Studies. Those selected as Baskin Feminist Scholars are expected to declare a major in FMST by the end of their first year at UCSC.

Applications will be evaluated based on financial need, commitment to feminist social justice work, and academic merit. Students who are first-generation college students, have backgrounds underrepresented in higher education, or have overcome significant life obstacles are especially encouraged to apply.

Scholarship applications for the 2022-23 Academic year will be accepted in Fall quarter with a deadline of Friday November 4th at 11:59pm. Students will receive the scholarship announcement and application materials via email.
