Declaring the Major

All students are required to complete the Declaration of Major form, whether you enter UCSC as a proposed Feminist Studies major, another major, or undecided. The form must be completed within the first four weeks of the quarter to be effective the following quarter. We recommend that you begin the process as soon as possible, because several meetings - with your college, department, and faculty advisor - are required to complete the declaration. There are no prerequisite courses that must be satisfied before declaring the Feminist Studies major.

Transfer Students are encouraged to declare the major as soon as possible, so that they are assured entrance into the required core courses. FMST 1 and FMST 100 must be completed in the junior year, so that students will be prepared to enroll in the senior thesis/project independent study (FMST 195) for one or two quarters of their senior year, a requirement for all students writing a senior thesis or doing a project. The Chair of the Feminist Studies Undergraduate Committee can determine which courses from other colleges will successfully transfer to the major.

To declare the Feminist Studies major:

  1. Schedule an appointment with your college academic preceptor to review and sign “Section I: College Review” of the Declaration of Major form. This form is available at your college office.
  2. Familiarize yourself with the content of this Web site (especially the Undergraduate section,) print and complete to the best of your ability the Requirements for the FMST Major form, then schedule an appointment with Department Advisor Nicolette Czarrunchick to review and complete “Section II: Department Advising/Curriculum Planning.” Appointments are generally scheduled on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday each week during the academic year.
  3. Following department advising, meet with a faculty advisor on the Feminist Studies Undergraduate Committee who will review and sign Section II.
  4. Return to the Feminist Studies office to obtain the department advisor’s signature in “Section III: Department Approval.” In most cases, the office will then give you a copy of your completed Declaration of Major form and distribute the remaining copies.
  5. If your proposed program exceeds your projected final quarter, you must return to your college for approval of “Section IV: Extension of Enrollment.”
