Marge [Gelders] was born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1922. A lifelong activist for human rights, Marge earned a B.A. at UC Berkeley and began graduate studies in political theory under John Schaar, who she followed to UC Santa Cruz where she completed a PhD in 1984 in History of Consciousness. At UCSC, Marge discovered a passion for teaching and became an ardent advocate of women's rights. Marge was a founding member of the Women's Studies Department at UCSC and taught from 1976 until her retirement in 1989, but lectured for nearly a decade afterward.  See more here.
