Graduate Program
There are now dozens of M.A. and several Ph.D. programs in women's studies, feminist studies, and gender studies in the United States, Europe, and Australia. The NWSA Guide to Graduate Work in Women's Studies, available at UCSC’s McHenry Library Reference, in the Feminist Studies office, or through www.nwsa.org, will be helpful in identifying these programs.
It is also possible to enter a program in a traditional field and specialize in women/gender/feminist studies. The UCSC FMST Parenthetical Notation is one model of this kind of program.
Current Feminist Studies undergraduates who are interested in an academic career are strongly encouraged to consult with one or more faculty in the area of their interest. Faculty are familiar with the feminist studies scholarship in their fields and can often recommend universities or programs most suited to a student's interests and needs. If you plan to attend graduate school, but not immediately after graduation, we advise you to request letters of recommendation from faculty while you are enrolled at UCSC. Graduate schools generally require three letters of recommendation.
The Career Center operates a letter service for UCSC Undergraduates. Free for undergraduates, the Career Center maintains files and sends letters of recommendation for alumni for nominal fees. More information is avaialbe here.
